Life got you down? Well, good news: you have the power to get back up. If you’re dealing with overwhelm, stress, or even just the mundane of everyday life, there are many things you can try that will help quiet your mind, reduce stress, take control and impact your physical, mental, and emotional health.

Here are twelve tips that can help you feel more capable of facing and conquering your everyday life.

1. Find inspiration in whatever you need to.

What makes you feel inspired? A certain role model? A ted talk on a particular topic you’re passionate about? A motivational quote? A picture on your wall? Your own personal goals? Whatever it is, hold onto that.

And if you don’t know, start looking around at your life and ask yourself, ‘what makes me want to keep going?’

2. Try something new.

When is the last time you tried something new? A new food? New yoga stance? New skill? Open yourself up to new possibilities and expand your horizons. It can be very freeing, not to mention the fact that you will have the chance to learn and expand your repertoire.

3. Connect with someone you care about.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: human connection is so important! If you are stressed out or scared, please don’t isolate yourself. Reach out to someone you love. Especially in these challenging times, chances are that they will be happy to talk to you too.

4. Journal.

Sometimes the act of writing things down can be quite cathartic. Try journaling your thoughts and/or whatever you are feeling. Getting it out on paper can help clear your mind.

5. Drink water.

We’ve all heard this. Hydrating is essential to your overall health, so don’t overlook it. Don’t take your health for granted, and make it a priority to drink water throughout the day.

6. Exercise and pay attention to what your body needs.

You don’t need to run six miles every day, but getting moving will make you feel better and improve your health. Pay attention to your body and do what you can. Even simply going for a short walk will get the heart pumping and give your body and brain a boost!

7. Make a gratitude list.

Sometimes a simple shift in perspective can help you get back to a better place. What are you grateful for?

8. Give compliments.

Why are we so afraid to give compliments? Try it – it will make you feel good, and you might even make someone’s day.

9. Intentionally minimize distractions.

This one is so relevant, in this age of short attention spans and very little patience. Do we really need multiple screens available at all times? Try focusing only on what you are doing. If I’m writing, for example, I do not need to also have the TV on and my phone at my fingertips. This may be easier said than done (at least in my case) but minimize your space and simply focus on one thing at a time.

10. Stretch.

So many of us don’t do this enough and are therefore walking around with stiff and achy bodies. Do a little daily stretching to limber up and get the muscles moving, and see how you feel. For me, it does wonders.

11. Get that fresh air.

If at all possible, get outside every day. Go for a run, a walk, a bike ride, sit on the porch, stand in the sun in the backyard; whatever you need to do to get outside and remind yourself that you live on this beautiful earth. I know it can be tough with so much going on all the time and the many distractions around you, but staying indoors all the time can take its toll. Allow yourself to step away and breathe in some fresh air.

12. Meditate or practice breathing exercises.

There is so much to be said for quieting your mind. I’ll admit meditation can still be a challenge for me because I have an active mind and it’s difficult to switch it off, but I’ve found that breathing exercises have been a really good start. When I’m stressed or find my thoughts spinning, it helps me to sit and focus only on my breath. The act of feeling myself deeply breathe in and out helps to slow my mind and feel more grounded.

It’s pretty clear that the world today is chaotic sometimes, and it can be hard to keep up and make the most of it. Hopefully, these tips can help you improve your everyday life and start feeling like a conqueror.

Try some things out, do what works for you, and find your balance.
